Good work! You have successfully finished your interview…but your work isn’t done yet, the job interview is only the beginning. Instead of twiddling your thumbs and idly waiting by the phone or computer for a response, make sure to stay on the radar by following up (properly) after an interview.
Below are some tips on how to pull off a tactful follow up after your interview.
1. Get their Information
Do not, I repeat, DO NOT leave before getting the interviewer’s business card and asking what the next steps to take should be. This first step is crucial for following up with them afterward. Plus business cards are always useful!

With this said, it is crucial to remember to keep this email brief, tailored, brief, professional and BRIEF, this is not another interview! By sending a follow-up “Thank You,” you are showing the company that they are a priority to you.
3. Check In (But Don’t Over Do It!)
When calling or emailing to check back in, there is a fine line between pushy and persistent. If you’re smart, you followed step 1 and ended your interview by asking about the next steps to take and when you should be expecting them to contact you. If that expected date has passed with no contact, then it’s okay to call or email (politely) to check back in. Make sure to keep these check-ins in check!
Keep your calls and/or emails low pressure, do not just ask, “Did I get the job?” unless you really do not want the job. You could say something along the lines of, “Hello (Insert Name), I hope you are having a great week! You mentioned that you’d be finalizing your decision for the (Insert Position) this week and I am eager to know if there are any updates. If there is anything I can assist you with in your decision-making process, please let me know. Thank You!”
4. Don’t Be Basic, Be Different.
Contrary to what a lot of people might think, interviewers aren’t just waiting to give you a call. When conducting a proper follow-up, try to be different than the “competition”. This could mean staying engaged with your interviewer by linking an interesting article that relates back to something you discussed during your interview or thanking them for advice they previously gave you that you implemented recently. Another way to stay relevant and be different is to add your interviewer on LinkedIn. This is a great tool that will not only reiterate your skill set and experience but will also show your interest in the position/company. Do even more and follow the company (as well as the interviewer) and share/link articles about their industry to start a conversation and get noticed. Plus, even if you don’t get the job for some reason, this is a great way to stay connected and build a professional relationship.
When it comes down to it, the interview is more than just the face-to-face time spent answering questions. Make sure you’re just as prepared for the follow-up with a post-interview game plan.
