Just because you are a great leader, doesn’t mean that you will be a great mentor. A mentor is someone that is understanding, caring and a helping hand. Mentors are able to accept where their mentees are and make sure they can transform them to the next level.

From your high school counselor to your supervisor at work, almost everyone has had a mentor to improve their focus and help raise their quality of life. Being a mentor is not easy (neither is fin), but if you have a great mindset, skills, and the ability to motivate, you are on the right track.
1. Be Transparent
As a mentor, you have to know how to be real. People want to be able to relate to their mentors and that is not possible if you are not open and honest. Not being transparent is a huge problem when it comes to being a mentor and a leader. If you don’t let your mentee get to know who you truly are, your relationship will never prosper. Answer their questions and be open, I know this can be a challenge but make this a give and take relationship (this means you can ask them for help too)!
2. Set Ground Rules
Create a time frame that works for both of you. Discuss the frequency of meetings and what you will get accomplished at each meeting, a relative start and end date should be discussed as well. Make sure that your mentee knows that you will have open and honest conversations with them if they allow. The best mentors that I’ve ever had were critical all of the time and gave me their opinion no matter how I would take it. Make sure that you establish trust and confidentiality. A mentor-mentee relationship will not work without maintaining trust because you will never be able to meet your full potential if your mentee always judges you for your actions and others find out about it.
3. Keep a positive Attitude
"A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events, and outcomes. It is a catalyst and it sparks extraordinary results." Wade Boggs. Remember that everyone learns differently. Don’t get frustrated if your mentee isn’t understanding you in the first few meetings. Stay focused on the goals that were set in the beginning and always think of the outcome. If you stay positive during your experience, your mentee will respect it and be willing to be more involved. Here are 7 more qualities of being an effective mentor!
4. Stay Committed
No one wants to have a mentor flake on them every time they are in need. There’s nothing worse than building a relationship with someone and then having them fall off the face of the earth! Meet with your mentee at the time scheduled and always keep your promises. As a mentor, you should be reliable, trustworthy and honest. If you do not have time to commit, please don’t waste your mentee’s time!
5. Never stop being a Mentee
Once you’re a mentor, never stop being a mentee. Mentorship is a two-way street. You can always learn from your mentee and walk in the direction of your goals. Being a mentor is not about having a "mini me." It’s about growth, change, and guidance.
