How to Write a Perfect CV for the Job of Your Dream

You finally have the opportunity to use your CV for the job of your dreams. That’s awesome! But how can you make sure that your CV will land you an immediate interview? There are a lot of aspects to take into consideration while writing the “perfect” resume, many of which you haven’t even thought about.

It more than understandable to make mistakes, as they are part of anyone’s life. However, when our dream job is at stake, mistakes are no longer allowed. That’s why we have prepared a simple guide on how to write the perfect CV for the job of your dream. 

1. Formatting and Templating

Whenever you’re applying for a job post, imagine that you’re competing for the same spot with another 200 skilled people. Scary thought, isn’t it? Now, imagine that you’re the recruiter and you’re supposed to review all those applications. 

It would take you days to properly read all of them, time that no recruiter has. Therefore, on average, a recruiter will spend about 5 to 6 seconds to skim through your CV. That’s why the first impression matters a lot.

The choice is yours: send a properly and attractively formatted CV and win the first round of reviewing, or fail to do so and lose all your chances from the very first round. But we’re talking about your dream job, so we’ll start with the perfect outline and we’ll continue with the golden rules of formatting:


In case you don’t have any work experience because you’ve just finished your studies, it would be better to write your educational section first and leave the experience one after.


Keep it basic. You impress with your skills and background, not with trendy and hard-to-read fonts. Your goal is to create a readable CV, so fonts like Arial, Georgia, Tahoma, or Times New Roman work best. Concerning the font’s size, the most readable match is between 11 and 12 pt., but when you write important things like your name and section titles, you’d better opt for 14 or 16 pt. at tops.


The key to a great resume is consistency and simplicity of the layout used. Therefore, setting all the margins at one inch is more than perfect. Concerning the headings, all of them must look the same. Also, remember not to abuse underlining, bolding, and italics. Last but not least, use the same dates format all over the CV. If you choose the “September 2012” format, stick with it.


Unless the company requires them, cut off trilling graphics and photos. As well, the last thing you want to do is to make your CV longer than one page by including irrelevant details about your background. 2. Contact Info

Your full name and email are not enough. You want to cover all the possible ways through which they can contact you. Usually, most candidates start their CV with their work experience, but you can do better than that. To make the recruiter remember you, start your flawless CV with a short paragraph (100 words top) in which you sell yourself professionally. Express your strengths and underline the reasons why you stand out from the crowd.

Here, you have two options. You either write a professional objective or a summary of your accomplishments. The difference stands in what you underline – the skills and motivation or achievements and experiences. 

The objective style is focused on the skills and is best for the candidates with less work experience. If you’re an experienced professional, you should definitively go for the summary style and prize a bit with what you achieved in your field past the years.

4. Work Experience

Usually, the work experience section from your CV is where the recruiter spends most of his time. That’s why listing your previous positions in chronological order and relating your duties won’t be enough. Finally, an easier part. In the educational section, you must include only your graduations that happened after high school, unless that is your highest degree of education. Something a bit trickier now, the skills section. I believe that we can all name a dozen skills we have but listing all of them in the CV is not an option. To make it even easier, take a look at the job description and see what skills they expect you to have. Add a few more that you believe that will be appreciated by your employer. 7.  Additional Sections

I bet this is the section in which most candidates lie in order to raise their chances to get that interview. Lying in your CV is a classic mistake. Recruiters know a lie when they see it, so you’d better spare yourself the trouble and stay true to yourself.
