7 Types of People to Surround Yourself With in the Office (and in Life)

Chances are, you will be spending more time in the office then you will be at home. Between the long hours that you will have to put it, the various work-related events and even the holiday party - it is important to surround yourself with the people that you will learn the most from, can trust and ultimately be a better person for knowing. Making friends is not as easy as it may have been in middle school, but it isn't as difficult as you may think, as an adult, either. You just have to look for the right things. Here is a list of the people you want to get to know better than most: 

1. Hard worker

Dedication oozes from this individual. When you come into the office, you see that they have already started working, while you might still need to finish your cup of coffee before you can truly delve into your day’s work. You may be thinking this person may be a suck-up, overachiever, etc. That way of thinking may take you straight back to highschool, separating the class clowns from the nerds. You’re no class clown, so what can you take away from someone putting in the extra time effort and showing drive? The answer is A LOT. If nothing else, you will be more inclined to do the same amount of work if not more. Healthy competition not only drives results, but improves your own personal work habits. Always make it a habit to surround yourself around this kind of person!


2. Positive

Humans are emotional creatures, so having bad days is definitely to be expected. Learning to separate emotions from work is not always possible, but it definitely helps when you surround yourself around people that are uplifting and help you get out of your hump instead of allowing you to drown in your woes. People that are always happy are not exactly who I am talking about. You can be happy, but not very positive and vice versa. More specifically, I am speaking of the people that tend to look at things in a very positive way. When bad things happen, these are the people that think logically and help you solve your problems, and if they cannot, they help you move on. These are some of the best kinds of people you can not just surround yourself with in the office but in life. 


3. People who ask questions

We have all heard of the saying that there is no such thing as a bad question. That’s not ALWAYS the case, but for the most part, it is true. People that are always asking questions are the ones that want to know how to do everything the right way and want answers so that they fully understand everything. Everyone is always grateful for the person in the room that ends up raising their hand and asking the same question everyone else had on their mind. It would be a great benefit to you to befriend this individual, because at the end of the day you will always be in the know. 


4. Dreamers

You say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one….those are some very famous words spoken by the late John Lennon. Solely, dreaming will not get you anywhere, but aiming to turn your dreams into a reality is how to become successful. The benefit of surrounding yourself with people that have big dreams is it will rub off on you. Maybe you will want to own your own company someday or ignite something inside of you that has been long forgotten. From the day-to-day standpoint, dreamers will inspire you to do better, be better and think more creatively. Keep them around! 


5. People who listen 

You know that saying, “2 ears 1 mouth?” That’s a saying that resonates with everyone in every setting. You always want to be doing more listening than speaking. Most people listen to respond, not to understand. When you spend your time listening, you learn to listen for the right things. You will know when you have opportunities to step out of the box and showcase some work, ask for meetings, back off, and many more things that will help you in your daily relationship interactions. If you adopt that habits of the people you spend the most time with, then this is a habit you will want and fast!

6. People who trust you

It’s very important to be around people that trust you to make decisions. Obviously it is easier if that trust is earned, but there has to be a starting point as well. This is relevant in every social setting, but especially in the workplace. In order to have creative freedom, it is important to work with people that trust you to make decisions. It’s limiting to work alongside people that don’t trust you to take initiatives on your own. Taking chances on employees is part of good company culture and you definitely want to surround yourself with people that will believe in you, see things in you and ultimately empower you to be the best that you can be

7. People who have overcome obstacles

People that have gone through their share of obstacles professionally and personally can make great mentors for you. The best thing about people that have had lots of experience is that they know how NOT to do things. These are people you can learn so many valuable things from that will save you from having to learn those things on your own. Spend some time talking to people in the office who are older, have had many different jobs or have been doing the same thing for many, many years. These are the people that will help you get to your destination a lot faster.  



You spend more than 8 hours a day at work, more than 40 hours in a week, so make that time count and grab some coffee or plan to go to the movies with some people that will serve you well in that position as well as later in life.
