If you have vowed to make 2018 the year that you get a promotion, you need to strengthen your credentials. Are you new to your job? You have plenty of time to start moving in the right direction. You need to start asking the right questions then when you get the answers, you should follow through with the right actions.

Here are some tips that will help you to develop a plan for strengthening your credentials:

Develop a Career Pivot Plan

If you think that your current employer is limiting you, it might be time to make a bold career move. You need to define your preferred outcome before changing jobs. You have to set specific targets and expectations if you want to move from a job that zaps your energy to one that excites you.

Which activities excite you? Which skills do you have and how can you use them? You should write down your strengths and weaknesses, as they will help you to find the job of your dreams. For instance, if you are looking for nursing jobs, you need to include the right keywords in your search.

You should add a transition guide to your career pivot plan: how soon will you change jobs? Do you need to acquire new skills to increase your chances of success?

Improve Your Position with Your Employer

If you are feeling dissatisfied with your current job, you might think that the only solution is to get another one. However, you need to explore whether it is possible to gain satisfaction in your current workplace. Do you need a raise? Do you have your eye on a different department? Is there a specific role that you want?

You can achieve a lot by just stepping up at your workplace. You should start by developing a proposal then approaching the right people: employer, head of IT, or the human resource manager. Make sure that you present your ideas in a compelling way to show your boss that you are an underutilized asset. How can you help your company to increase its productivity, and make more money?

Develop Thought Leadership

When you think about your line of work, are there people who jump into your mind? The reason that such people come to mind is that they have made themselves invaluable in the industry. You can do the same by setting yourself apart as an expert in a given subject matter.

You need to make a deliberate and unrelenting effort in marketing your talents and personalities in the right places and at the right time. Social media platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn will help you to reach many people at no cost. Make sure that you post informative articles and provide your commentary on a few happenings in your industry.

If you have the time, you should also respond to any questions that people ask you online. Doing so will make you a sought-after expert in your field, and this could get you a better position in the workplace.

Gain New Skills

Inadequate credentials and skills are usually the biggest impediments when it comes to changing jobs. You might be a perfect fit for several job ads if one skill did not rule you out as a candidate. If that is the case with you, start considering different ways to acquire that skill.

In some cases, you can acquire a new skill in as little as three months. However, some skills might take up to three years to learn. Knowing how long it will take to gain a new skill is important, as it will help you to start as soon as possible. Before you attain full credentials for some skills, you will have to get entry-level certification.

As long as you plan to get full certification, you can get yourself through the doors of certain jobs by getting entry-level certification. Finding the time to study while working a fulltime job can be hard but the effort will be worth it. If cost is a hindrance, you should look for free online courses and study them.

Nurture a Professional Network

Social media not only gives you a chance to develop thought leadership but it also allows you to grow and nurture a professional network. Develop your LinkedIn Profile and constantly be reaching out to professionals within your industry that could provide future opportunities.

Knowing the right people and learning new skills are some of the things that you can do to advance in your career. If you want a new job, knowing the right people is a step in the right direction. As long as you stay in touch with your professional colleagues, you will come to their minds when a new job position becomes available.

The above tips will come in handy if you want to strengthen your credentials and get a promotion at work. We all want to become CEOs and managers in a short amount of time but the truth is that you need to be patient if you wish to grow career wise.
