Success is something that all of us want to achieve. Each person’s path to success may be unique, but the world’s most successful people share many commonalities. There is a certain set of characteristics that almost all successful people possess. Those of which have helped shape them to become who they are today.
With the job market becoming increasingly competitive, recruiters are not just looking at job experience, resumes, education, etc. They are looking for the qualities that candidates possess and how they will fit into the company’s culture. While there are many, many wonderful and useful characteristics to have when delving into the chaos called the job market; there are a select few that will put you front and center over other candidates.
Recruiters are looking for; time management skills, leadership skills, and aligned values with the company. This article will discuss what these skills are and how to develop or fine tune them.
Practicing proper time management is an essential skill that all employees should develop. Having good time management shows that you are dependable and will consistently follow through with your tasks efficiently.
Not only does having proper time management skills show that you are dependable, but it also demonstrates candidates’ commitment to the company and the task at hand. Candidates who show that commitment and dependability are more likely to get hired on as they are seen as a great asset to the company.
Leaders that practice good time management are able to plan goals and strategies to use to attain those goals. By having strong organizational skills, leaders are able to help workers understand those goals and meet them.
- Learn to Prioritize
We only have 24 hours each day. If you do not know what is most important, you would not know where to start in order to efficiently utilize each and every minute. Highly successful people never finish everything in a day, but they always finish the most important things that need to be done each day.
Take a few minutes out of every day to figure out which goals are the most important. Then focus on solving those problems first before trying to tackle the ones that aren't. Once you're able to determine what tasks are the most important, you'll be able to complete everything and reach your goals much more quickly and efficiently.
- Set Goals
Plan ahead and know your goals. It is a good idea to set daily, weekly, monthly, and long-term goals for yourself. Ask yourself what needs to get done andevaluate what your goals are, whether they be personal or professional. When setting these goals, keep in mind what your priorities they are and set them before goals that might not be as time pressing or important. Try creating a timeline for completion.
For example, if you have a big project to complete, try breaking it down into small increments. It’s also a good idea to utilize an online calendar where you can receive notifications and be able to view all your tasks at once. By giving yourself adequate time to complete and plan out a project, you will end up with a great end result as opposed to a jumbled and messy end result.
Proper time management is the process in which you plan and practice control over the amount of time you spend on an activity.
With succession planning becoming something that most successful companies now practice, recruiters are looking for candidates with leadership skills more than ever. Recruiters are looking for candidates that can fit or eventually fit into senior and management roles. While being a leader can come naturally to some people, it is also a skill that can be learned.
Naturally, there are a lot of qualities that make someone a good leader and thousands of books have been written about this. At its core, good leadership is about two things: communication and delegation. Here are two tips that can help you further develop your leadership skill and engage your team in producing better results.
Good leaders possess soft skills like effective communication, positivity, organization, and delegation. They must also be able to have successful meetings with employees. These skills are vital as an effective leader with these skills will be able to maintain a productive and positive workplace, take the company higher, and keep retention rates good.
Leaders need to be able to clearly explain tasks and goals to employees. Imagine having a manager whom you had a one on one meeting with, and instead of praising what you did well they spent the time berating you on what you could do better. Would you want to stay with the company still? Most likely not.
An effective leader needs to practice listening. A huge part of effectively communicating with someone is to be able to listen to the other person and empathize with them. When leaders take the time to listen and evaluate, they will be able to recognize ALL aspects of an evaluation. Proper communication is not one-sided and must involve a proper discussion between the parties.
Have you ever tried to do too many things at once? It doesn’t usually work out too well. Effective leaders need to learn how to delegate tasks to others. Not only will it free up your time to take care of important tasks, delegating tasks will allow everyone to get more involved and invested.
Many leaders don’t delegate enough as they feel that by delegating tasks it shows that they are unable to do those tasks. However, a strong leader won’t let their pride get in the way and use their organizational skills to evaluate who the tasks should be delegated to, and how.
When leaders have the capability to delegate tasks they get a chance to learn more about their team members by; practicing teamwork, learning strengths and weaknesses, empower employees and identify measurable outcomes.
Aligned Values with the Company
While these skills are extremely vital to have, companies are very attracted to candidates that align with who they are and where they want to go. Establishing a happy and productive company culture has become a high priority for many companies in recent years. Therefore, they are looking for candidates that will contribute to that culture instead of hurting it.
High-quality companies are not looking for candidates that need the job to meet their immediate needs like pay, benefits, and hours. They are looking for candidates who want the job. Employees that want to be at work produce better results. In addition, they are more likely to want to stay and grow with the company, therefore contributing to the success of the company and keeping retention costs low.
- Develop a Positive Attitude
Having a positive attitude is contagious! Employees with positive attitudes are able to practice good conflict management, diplomacy, develop rapport, and create a healthy work environment. Being able to find the silver lining and bring happiness to the workplace is what every company desires in an employee.No matter the job or the company, there will always come a time when things might get busy and stressful. Workers that don’t demonstrate positivity will spread that discontent around the company and will be more likely to produce bad work.
Practice small and simple acts like asking coworkers how their day was, or what they ate for lunch. People that feel as if they are in a positive environment where they are valued will be more likely to want to work and stay within the company.
- Finding a Good Personal Fit
Very often, people put too much focus on monetary success, short-term gains, and other's expectations. However, you will not be able to maintain that focus for long if you're not doing things you're passionate about. Make sure the company allows you to immerse yourself in your passion and focus on particular things that will keep you excited and motivated.
When interviewing with a company, be sure to ask a lot of questions to determine if it is the right fit for you. Not only are you able to evaluate if this is something you want to be doing long-term, but it will show the company that you are interested in staying. Most companies are looking for candidates with a productive and positive attitude that will align with the ideal company culture. By asking plenty of ideas you are also able to get an idea of what the company is looking for.
